Session: Classroom Management - The Power of Planning


This session is a Menu A course option for the WVCPD Teacher Academy and is open to all teachers. This session is designed around Marcia Tate’s book, Shouting Won’t Grow Dendrites. Key topics in the session include:

•Reflecting on practice and identifying areas for developing effective procedures to enhance student learning

•Understanding the difference between rules and procedures

•Understanding the connection between classroom management and student achievement

•Understanding specific practices that improve student focus

•Developing a growth plan for improving culture for learning in classroom

Your space will not be guaranteed until payment for the session or purchase order number is received.

A one-time registration fee of $125.00 provides you materials, instructors, and one night's lodging for qualified participants for all Academy sessions you attend during the 2017-18 cycle. Please pay the $125.00 registration fee online, mail to: WV Center for Professional Development - The Culture Center, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston, WV 25305, or provide a purchase order number from your county. For a full refund, registration cancellation must be made two weeks prior to the start of the session.

The 9:00 am start time provides for participants to drive to the session on the first day. One night’s lodging is available for participants traveling more than 80 miles or 90 minutes to the session.

Breakfast is not included with your lodging. There is a restaurant in the hotel as well as in the Charleston Town Center across the street from the hotel.

If you are attending the session scheduled closest to your home address and you are traveling more than two hours to the session (according to Google Maps), WVCPD will provide lodging the night before the session begins upon request. For assistance, please contact Brooke Green at  brooke.s.green@wv.gov with your name, the session title and dates you are attending, and your current home address. A confirmation email will be sent to you approximately one week prior to the session containing lodging details.

Please note: You must cancel 48 hours prior to the session to avoid being charged for your room.

If you do not meet the mileage requirements for lodging and would like to stay, you can book your room at our group rate of $109.00 at the Charleston Town Center Marriott, 304-304-6500.


This session is designed to accommodate the growing needs of new teachers and support the practice of experienced teachers. The session will equip educators with skills and practices to create effective well-managed classrooms.
