Session: Narrowing the Achievement Gap: Strategies to Support Under-Resourced


The goal of this session is to equip educators with a foundation of skills and practices that will lead to a career of classroom success. A Framework for Understanding Poverty will expand teachers' understanding of the impact of poverty on work habits, decision making, and learning. The session provides practical support and guidance for overcoming barriers and helping others.

This session will provide mental models and instructional strategies that can be used in the classroom to support students who are under-resourced.

Your space will not be guaranteed until payment for the session or purchase order is received.

A one-time registration fee of $125.00 provides you materials, instructors, and one night lodging for qualified participants for all Academy sessions you attend during the 2017-2018 cycle. Please pay the $125.00 registration fee online, mail a check in advance along with a printed registration to WV Center for Professional Development - The Culture Center, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston, WV 25305, or submit a county or school purchase order number. For a full refund, cancellation must be made two weeks prior to the start of the session.

The 9:00 am start time allows for participants to drive to the session on the first day. One night’s lodging is available for participants traveling more than 80 miles or 90 minutes to the session from their home address to the venue. If you are traveling more than two hours to the session, you may contact  Brooke Green at brooke.s.green@wv.gov or 304-558-0539 to request lodging the night before the session.

Breakfast is not included with your lodging. There is a restaurant in the hotel as well as food choices across the street at the Charleston Town Center Mall.



This session is designed to accommodate the growing needs of new teachers and support the practice of experienced teachers.The session will equip educators with skills and practices to create effective well-managed classrooms.
