Session: English Language for New AP Teachers - Advanced Placement Summer Institute (Charleston)

This session is currenlty full. To be placed on a waiting list, contact Jenna Green at Jenna.R.Green@wv.gov. The English Language session being held June 27-30 in Inwood, WV still has space available. Registration for that session is open through Monday, June 5.

Please Note: In order to complete your registration, you must enter your credit/debit card information or provide a purchase order number from your school or county. Your registration will not be complete without this information.

The Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institute is a subject-specific professional development opportunity. It provides teachers with the support and training needed to teach AP courses and to utilize AP teaching strategies. Teachers from West Virginia, as well as other states, come together at this institute to learn techniques and tactics for teaching. Participants also engage in discussion and exchange ideas and information with peers about AP courses and exams.

Topics that are often covered in AP Summer Institute sessions include:
· AP courses: goals, objectives, content, resources, bibliographies, and equipment
· The AP Examination: how it is developed and graded
· Syllabi, lesson plans, and assignments
· How to refresh and improve existing AP courses
· Recent changes in AP course descriptions

Instructor: Sherry Wynn Perdue

Before finding a home in the Oakland University Writing Center, Sherry completed an English/American Studies graduate program at Michigan State University and attended School of Criticism and Theory, then located at Dartmouth College. Currently, she is completing a Ph.D. in Education Leadership. Sherry has led both one-day workshops and week-long summer institutes. As an extension of her consultant role, each June she dons her table leader hat at the AP exam reading.?


Cost:
WV teachers:

Early registration fee: $100.00

Walk-in registration fee: $150.00 (applies to anyone registering after the June 5 registration deadline)

Out-of-state teachers: $800.00

The registration fee includes lunch, as well as the College Board professional development materials.

Registration fees must be paid online with a credit/debit card or a purchase order number must be provided at the time of registration.

Cancellations must be made before the registration deadline to receive a refund. After the registration deadline, no refunds will be given.

Graduate Credit:

Three hours of graduate credit will be available through Marshall University and West Virginia University. Representatives from each university will be on site during lunch to assist with graduate credit registration.

The cost of the credit is as follows:

Marshall University: $141.00

West Virginia University: $213.00

Participants must complete an additional 15 hours of coursework outside the institute to earn graduate credit. Please see the course syllabus for more information about graduate credit expectations.

Location/Lodging

The institute will take place at:

Capital High School
1500 Greenbrier Street
Charleston, WV 25311


Lodging will be provided at a local hotel. Your lodging location will be sent to you in your confirmation 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the institute. 

Lodging is provided to West Virginia teachers living at least 80 miles or 1.5 hours driving time from the session location at no additional cost. The deadline to reserve lodging is Monday, June 19. Lodging will not be available after the deadline.

Lodging is not provided to out-of-state participants. 


Requirements:
Teachers must be present for the entire institute (30 contact hours) to receive a completion certificate

Audience:
While AP and honors teachers are encouraged to attend, this institute is open to all teachers who are employed full time by a school system and wish to increase rigor in their classrooms.
